This week is National Chip Week. Everyone enjoys a chip supper but if they are used incorrectly, chip pans and traditional fat fryers can be a major fire hazard. Make sure you cook safely and know what to do if your chip pan catches fire. Cooking safelySimply changing the way you cook can prevent fire. Invest in a deep fat fryer or opt for oven chips as an alternative. If you are still using a chip pan or traditional fat fryer in your home be sure to follow these simple rules to reduce fire hazards and cook safely. - If you have to use a chip pan never fill it over a third full with oil or fat.
- Never be tempted to cook with a chip pan after consuming alcohol.
- Never leave the pan alone with the heat on – not even for a few seconds
- Never put the chips in the pan if the oil has started smoking. Turn off the heat and leave the oil to cool down, or else it could catch fire
In the event of a fire In the event of a fire follow these guidelines:
- Don't panic and don’t take risks.
- Don't move the pan.
- Never throw water or use a fire extinguisher on a hot fat fire.
- If it's safe to do so - turn off the heat, but never lean over the pan to reach the controls.
- Leave the kitchen, close the door behind you, tell everyone else in the home to get out and don’t go back inside for any reason.
- Call 999

Make sure you know the latest Met Office advice:- Before snow or ice - If you have to make a journey when snow is forecast, make sure you have warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and spade, and let someone know when you expect to arrive and your route. Try to wait until the roads have been gritted before travelling.
- Put grit or cat litter on paths and driveways to lessen the risk of slipping on compacted snow.
- Check on vulnerable neighbours.
During snow or ice - Avoid travel if possible.
- If you must drive check the Highway Code for advice on driving in ice and snowy weather. A summary of the advice is: Take care around gritters. Don't be tempted to overtake. Slow down — it can take 10 times longer to stop in snowy or icy conditions, so allow extra room. Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin. Manoeuvre gently and avoid harsh braking and acceleration. If you start to skid, gently ease off the accelerator and avoid braking. If braking is necessary, pump the brakes don't slam them on. If you get stuck, stay with your car and tie something brightly coloured to your aerial.
- If you go outside wear several layers of clothing and keep dry to prevent loss of body heat. Watch out for signs of hypothermia — uncontrollable shivering, slow/slurred speech, memory lapse and drowsiness and frostbite — loss of feeling in and pale appearance of fingers, toes, nose and ear lobes. Keep moving your arms and legs to help the blood circulate.
After snow and ice - Be careful when walking or driving on compacted snow — it may have turned to ice.
- Take care when shovelling snow. Cold air makes it harder to work and breathe, which adds some extra strain on the body and can be the cause of heart attacks in the vulnerable.

More heavy rain and high winds are forecast for today with gusts of up to 60mph possible. Downpours later in the week could see six inches of rain in just two days on Wednesday and Thursday in northern and western areas according to Meteogroup UK. With another heavy band of rain forecast for southern regions overnight, the Environment Agency has been warning homeowners to be alert to the risk of flooding. The agency has five flood warnings and 35 watches in force and dealt with close to 5,000 calls to its helpline on Saturday. Some of the larger catchments in Wales are particularly at risk of flooding for the next few days as rivers remain high. Make sure you have an emergency plan in place and get together a flood kit. It is important to call the National Pandemic Flu Service or your GP for a phone assessment if you suspect Swine Flu. This is because, at present, a self certification is required for the first seven days away from work. Thereafter a doctor's note will become necessary. However, a doctor will only be able to offer a note (without having examined the patient) if he or she is satisfied that a phone assessment has been carried out. This situation is being closely monitored by the Department of Health and may be subject to change in coming weeks but for now it is better to be safe than sorry!

A Japanese clothing company is selling a men's suit treated to fend off the flu virus. Haruyama Trading Co said the suit is coated with titanium dioxide which reacts with light to break down and kill the virus. Haruyama said it spent nearly a year developing the suit that costs 52,290 yen (£365) and goes on sale this week in Japan. A similar suit for ladies is being considered. The World Health Organisation has reported more than 340,000 confirmed cases of H1N1 worldwide, and more than 4,100 deaths.

Go in, stay in, tune inIn a major emergency, if you are not involved in the incident, but are close by or believe you may be in danger, the best advice is to go inside a safe building, stay inside until you are advised to do otherwise, and tune in to local radio or TV for information. Of course, there are always going to be particular occasions when you should not 'go in', for example if there is a fire, or you are advised differently by the emergency services or your own common sense. If you find yourself in the middle of an emergency, your common sense and instincts will usually tell you what to do. However, it is important to: - make sure 999 has been called if people are injured or if there is a threat to life
- not put yourself or others in danger
- follow the advice of the emergency services
- try to remain calm and think before acting, and try to reassure others
- check for injuries - remember to help yourself before attempting to help others
If you are not involved in the incident, but are close by or believe you may be in danger, in most cases the advice is: - go inside a safe building
- stay inside until you are advised to do otherwise
- tune in to local radio or TV for more information

Researchers are hoping to give around 1,000 youngsters in Britain a flu vaccine over the next two weeks to see which of two different drugs perform the best. One vaccine being used - Pandremix, made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) - has been approved by European regulators. Another made by Baxter is still being considered by the European Medicines Agency but could get approval this week. Professor Andrew Pollard, from the University of Oxford, said: "We are doing this trial to compare head-to-head the two vaccines which are going to be used in the UK against swine flu to see which one works best in children and which one is best tolerated. "We are sort of in a race against time because we know the flu season is already started. We hope to immunise the children over the next 10 days or so." The number of swine flu cases in the UK has almost doubled in a week, from an estimated 5,000 to 9,000, prompting speculation a second wave of infections is on its way. The Government is hoping to start vaccinating millions of people in high-risk groups, such as those with asthma and diabetes, and health workers, next month.

On the eve of the climate change meeting chaired by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the Senior Director of Prince's Rainforest Project, Justin Mundy, wrote a piece for The Huffington Post explaining the security implications of climate change.
"COP15 is not only about providing a solution to climate change, it is also, in a very real sense, a meeting the deliberations of which will have substantial security, economic and trade implications. This is because climate change may provide the trigger to send the planet's severely undermined ecosystems into a state of terminal decline.
"There is no solution to the problem of climate change without first finding a solution to the destruction of the world's tropical forests and upon that rest our hopes for a secure future.
"For herein lies the rub. Climate security, energy security, food security and water security are now all inextricably linked. There is no long term and stable security outcome that is viable unless all four challenges are met, understood and resolved."
